Battle of the Buffets |
|
Fiesta Henderson By: The Lady of The Night Out Millions of tourists come to LVNV because of its shock value. And that’s my favorite ingredient in the LVNV dining scene. You devour a four star meal in the most unlikely places. And that’s how I felt after numerous trips to the buffet at the Fiesta Henderson. Wow! For the price, it is the best buffet in its category. If your mother fried her own chicken, you know what real fried chicken is supposed to taste like. The fried chicken on this buffet is better. A perfectly crisp crust, which just enough pepper to make those taste buds tingle, lock in the supremely juicy chicken parts. So juicy, I’d thought they’d squirt like the clams at Captain Mike’s! And the grease was kept to a minimum. Every fress to impress restaurant in town serves crab cakes. These were shockingly upscale – plenty of fresh crab and only a thin overcoat of crisp breading. A lot of fancier restaurants don’t do half as good a job. Ditto for the popcorn shrimp. On the Chinese side, the hunan fish was as good as anything I’ve eaten in Hong Kong. The fish was fried, so it was encased in a parchment-like shell. The soy ginger scallion sauce had flecks of red pepper which ratcheted up the heat. Another thumbs up Oriental offering was the kung pao chicken. Thick ribbons of white meat were sweet and tasty. The sauce had the sweetest sautéed onions I’ve ever eaten. And the garlic sauce had plenty of garlic without becoming bitter. Vegans, this is your buffet. Only the Bellagio and the Aladdin do vegetables as well. The mixed vegetables were as bright as the gaudy carpet. Green peppers, green beans, red bell peppers, bright orange carrots and yellow squash offered a painter’s palette of freshness. What was so remarkable was that every contributor was cooking properly – from the soft squash to the toothy carrots. Macaroni and cheese, enjoying a Renaissance in popularity as a dish with reverse snob appeal, was terrific. It was heavy with cheddar cheese and studded with ham squares and pimento. The baked beans were infused with smoke and had a hint of molasses. The mashed potatoes were satiny even though they were mashed with their skins on. I liked the brown gravy. The lemon cake had a wonderfully tart filling running through it. I also fell in love with the cherry pie. It had a light, light crust dusted with powdered sugar. This buffet serves a wonderful raspberry iced tea. Very refreshing for a Vegas summer. The paella was short on fish but had marvelous fluffy rice. The egg rolls had a wonderful filling but were a tad too doughy. The only real misstep was the steamed mussels. They were tough. This is the only buffet in town where I’ve experienced singing waiters. Ask to sit in Rich’s section so he can serenade you. The Fiesta Henderson is located a 777 W. Lake Mead Drive at the 215.
