The Orchard Street Café Friday Seafood Buffet at the Frontier

Other than a wild trip to country and western night club, there’s not much reason for a local to set up in the frumpy Frontier. That is, unless you like seafood. Yep, pardner, the Orchard Street Café, the hotel coffee shop that doubles as its buffet, has a surprisingly good Friday night seafood buffet. Catch the catch!

McCormick & Schmick’s has the slimiest, tastiest oysters on the half shell in LVNV. The fresh oysters on this buffet could give ‘em a run for their money. They were slithery, juicy, iced down to the perfect temperature.

The crack and peel shrimp were firm and colorful, which you can’t say for way too many LVNV buffets. Their sidekick – the Frontier’s cocktail sauce – will give you a wake up call. It has just enough fresh horseradish to get those taste buds scorching.

The steamed clams were perfect! Too often stewing in hot butter turns them to rubber. No here. I didn’t find a clinker among the lot – and I ate a whole lot of ‘em.

Landlubbers will love the chicken noodle soup. I was shocked to discover it’s made with real chicken stock, boiled down from bones, which gives the soup a rich, gelatinous heft. The long, flat noodles – cooked al dente – were also homemade. Carrot chunks added a veggy flair.

Another winner was the mixed salad greens. I didn’t find a wilted edge on a single leaf. And the mix–ins were positively exotic. I haven’t seen flax seeds on a buffet anywhere. That definitely impressed me.

Who would image a great rack of lamb could be had at the Frontier? My slice was Mary Kay pink and just gamey enough.

While there were only a few offerings on the dessert table, almost all were four star. My fav was the tiramisu. I’m sure the fact that it was positively drenched in rum had nothing to do with its terrific taste. The bread pudding was amazing. It was steaming hot. The heat caused the cinnamon, sugar and raisins to create a just sweet enough dessert. And the java was better than Starbucks.
